”Evidence of Things Not Seen“ 24" X 16" Oil

Standing at the foundation of the Joseph and Emma Smith Home on the banks of the Susquehanna River, I was struck with the reality of the hardships that Emma had to endure as she moved from place to place so often. I recorded the word 'patient' in my journal. I came to realize in a very small way, how it must have felt to have just established a home and then have to give it up in order to follow the will of the Lord. Even though Emma was never allowed to see the plates she helped in many ways to bring forth the Book of Mormon. Her faith sustained her during times when she could have become discouraged.

During this time of hardship Emma was pregnant with their first child. Faith in the Lord and hope of this joyous occasion was surely tried as the small boy was taken from this life. In the following months another Marvelous Work was brought forth as the Book of Mormon was finished. I can't help but think of what is required of me to build up the kingdom of Heaven and how it pales in comparison to what others have sacrificed and endured with faith.
