”Takin’ The Long Way Home“
24 X 30 Oil
A marvelous study of light and shadow, Takin’ The Long Way Home is a playful reminder
of the simple joy of childhood. The white pickets of the fence with their corresponding
slanting shadows make for strong visuals which could have easily overpowered the
central figure of this painting. David’s skillful use of strong light and measured
brushwork bring a visual harmony to the entire composition allowing the viewer to
easily wander through the delightful scene without ever loosing sight of the young
boy and his companion.
David’s son, Thomas, was model for this work. The view looks northwest on main street
with the Scovil Bakery on the left. Lucius Scovil, original
proprietor, cooked his breads and crackers in two indoor ovens and a third outdoors.
Now fully restored, the Scovil Bakery is a favorite stop for visitors who are offered
a small gingerbread cookie or other treat. The young passerby in this painting would
have likely been a fan of the confectioneries which were also offered in the shop,
though the consumption of too much sugar was frowned upon by the parents of his day.
