David Koch - Artist
This was the first painting completed after a trip
to Montreal, Canada to see a retrospective
of John William Waterhouse. I wanted to cement the things that I learned from his
magnificent paintings.
I kept my darks in the hair and skin very warm and
made the skin very light and cool compared to the darks.
This warm and dark underpainting set the tone for the rest of the painting
and made it easier to select colors that harmonized with the begining colors.
Trust the value and colors you put down when compared
to the colors next to them.
At first your painting may seem too dark. This is because there is so much blank
canvas that distorts your perception.
Notice how dark the white sleeve appears compared
to the toned canvas.
However it looks correct next to the finished parts of the painting.
