”Afternoon Visit“
16" X 12" Oil
David’s fascination with the joys of childhood is nowhere more evident than in Afternoon
Visit. What can a boy find in a puddle? Apparently a sufficient enough distraction
to make him late for his afternoon visit. After his distraction will he hurry to
catch up with mother and sister? Or perhaps in David’ vision of things is the curious
boy the one making an afternoon visit, a visit to the nearest distraction?
The setting for Afternoon Visit is the John Taylor Home. Part of a beautifully restored
complex of shops and homes, the building sits on the west side of Main Street next
to the Times and Seasons printing office. John Taylor was editor of the bimonthly
Times and Seasons and would eventually become the third president of The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Also printed at this location was the Nauvoo Neighbor,
the city’s weekly newspaper.
